The Wilderness Chapel

Phase II: The Wilderness Chapel

Mentone, AL - Has your church ever wanted its own retreat?  A special place where you can build deeper relation- ships than is possible in the hurriedness of a Sunday morning?  Imagine a place where you can sit atop a rock bluff overlooking a mountain river and ponder what is really important in life. Would you like to end a day of biking and swimming by relaxing around a bonfire roasting marshmallows? We have just the place, and you can build memories and relationships here that will last for generations.  It is beautiful, peaceful, and private, with thousands of acres of valleys, trails, and streams just waiting for you to explore. Most importantly, any church can afford it.

Introducing “The Wilderness.”

In April of 2004 our family began building a Christian retreat on land adjoining the 14,000 acre Little River Canyon National Preserve atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, Alabama.      Our desire is to provide a facility in an environment so beautiful that those visiting will be drawn to the One who created such beauty. The property has a pond, a great bonfire pit with a band / stage area, direct access to miles of secluded hiking / mountain biking / horseback riding trails, a crystal clear swimming hole on the Little River, volleyball, horseshoes, and a large game field.  The property has three cabins, a 5,000 square foot chapel / bunkhouse (sleeps 50), and a renovated 4,500 square foot farmhouse (sleeps 28).

Besides youth retreats and family vacations, possible uses are: marriage enrichment weekends, family reunions, missionaries on furlough,  hunting outreach weekends, church leadership planning retreats, or mother-daughter / father-son retreats.

Now that the chapel / bunkhouse is built and the farmhouse is renovated, we are opening full-time.  Our plan is to rent out the entire property to churches for a week at a time during the summer months.   For $4200 your church will have exclusive use of all the facilities for one week in the summer and one weekend that fits your schedule during the rest of the year.  In total the facility sleeps 88 people, which averages out to a cost of five dollars ($5.30) per person, per night. Churches can split their summer weeks with other churches in order to use their resources wisely.

Click here for rates for individual days.

Send a representative to spend a night or weekend with us.  Once you feel the peace and see the beauty in this place, you will know if it is right for your Church.
